When was kicking allowed in volleyball

Whether by accident or as a last resort, kicking the ball up with your foot can be the only way to save a ball in defense. This is actually one of the most common times to use your feet in volleyball. After blocking, you land and turn to see where the ball is in defense, right? Well, the reaction time is quick.

Flicking it up with your foot is a common skill, and some setters particularly Brazilian setters, I wonder why… are incredibly good at this.

The Chase: The most spectacular foot saves that decorate the walls of popular sites like volleyball-movies. Players jumping over barriers. Sprawling out like madmen, crashing into banners and advertisements--this is what volleyball is all about. Kinda like this:. Again, this has to do with controlling the volleyball. Controlling the ball with your hands is just easier than using your feet.

Think about the role of the setter: to perform the perfect set, you need to place the ball in a one foot by one foot space. If you can do this with a kick, kudos to you! But each time you practice using your feet when the ball drops below waist height, you lose an opportunity.

An opportunity to become comfortable controlling the ball with your hands in different situations. To be honest, not really. Rare volleyball players are better controlling the ball with their feet than with their hands. If you are playing with inexperienced volleyball players, it is highly recommended that you are not allowed to use the foot for playing because soon you will face a situation where somebody uses foot, and someone uses hands to play the ball, and you can imagine what will happen.

The rule for kicking the ball changed a few decades ago. It used to be illegal that you cannot use any part of the lower body waist down for playing the ball during the game, but today it is legal to use a foot for playing the ball. I think this was a good rule change because when you are digging the ball, or you have a game situation which happens fast, you might accidentally touch the ball by feet. When you touch the ball with feet, this is counted for one touch, and after the foot contact, your team has two touches left to deliver the ball to another side if your foot touch was the first touch.

It might be even possible that your teams all three contacts are foot touches, and this is legal. So in reality, you can hit the ball with your foot all the time. Like I said at the beginning, you can kick the ball with your foot all the time. Moreover, you can even hit the ball with your knee, shoulder, and even head.

Playing with your hands is logical and has a simple explanation. You have way more control over the ball once you attack with the palm of your hand than with your head. Your arms are more cunning than your legs so you have a better chance of reacting.

Kicking the ball with any part of your body other than your hands is extraordinary. And in lots of cases, this move is successful, and they are able to keep the ball in game. Kicking in beach volleyball will again be very inconsistent compared to good solid hits with your arms. In most situations where you might think about kicking in beach volleyball , a dive would be more appropriate and result in a better hit. The main reason I wanted to share the information in this article was to share more in-depth knowledge about a commonly asked question that many of us have an incomplete answer about.

There is a sport played mainly in Asian countries called Sepak Takraw. The ball is much smaller and designed for kicking.

Originally the Takraw ball was made of reeds that were entwined to make a ball about the size of a small melon. Modern balls are made of hard synthetic plastic. The teams have 3 players each instead of 6. Instead of playing mainly with your arms and hands, you use everything except your arms and hands! Players mainly use their feet but frequently use their shoulders, knees, and head as well. If you would like to learn more about this sport, I wrote an in-depth post and even included a pretty cool video.

You can find it in this post called: What Is Sepak Takraw? In any league at any level you can use any part of your body above your waist. You probably will never use your head intentionally to hit the ball in a serious game, but it is legal.
