What is mfm fellowship

The MFM fellows also take a graduate course in Biostatics and Prenatal Genetic counseling during their training through the university. The educational objective of our fellowship is to provide the clinical, research, and teaching experience to enable the graduates of our program to become academic Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists with the unique knowledge and skills that will enable then to become the researchers, leaders, and teachers of our profession in the future.

The three specific educational objectives that will allow us to achieve these goals can be divided into three categories: clinical, research, and teaching. Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship. Fellows participate in 18 months of clinical training including time with instructors from the divisions of MFM, genetics, family planning, and critical care.

The equivalent of one year is spent pursuing research activities and preparing a thesis for defense. There are a remaining six months of elective time used for a combination of clinic and research depending on a particular fellow's goals and needs.

We are very proud of our integrated Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship that represents an educational collaboration between the Divisions of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at NorthShore and the University of Chicago.

This program was built on the foundations of the U of C program that has a legacy of outstanding fellowship trainees over multiple decades. The combined ACGME program trains five fellows at a time to become subspecialists and consultants in the care of women with high-risk pregnancies. Under the guidance of the Program Director David Ouyang, MD, and Associate Director Maritza Gonzalez, MD this fellowship provides extensive experience in the diagnosis, treatment and management of medical, surgical and obstetrical complications of pregnancy.

In addition, the fellows are trained to develop proficiency and expertise in ultrasound and antenatal diagnosis, including procedural skills such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling and fetal blood sampling. These educational objectives can be readily accomplished due to some unique strengths that our integrated program possesses, including:. The fellowship includes abundant protected research time at least 12 months for the fellows to develop a thesis that will be defended at the end of their training.
