Edward then carries Bella on his back and races to a large open field where his family is waiting. A storm rages to the west. Esme and Bella watch the other Cullens play baseball with incredible speed and power, and it becomes clear that they need to play during a thunderstorm to hide the loud crack of their bats against the ball.
Esme tells Bella that she had jumped off a cliff when her baby died and that she now sees Edward as a son. Suddenly, Alice senses that other vampires are approaching. Edward reads their minds and believes that they are just curious, not dangerous, so the Cullens warily continue to play. Edward stands protectively by Bella, apologizing for exposing her to danger. Soon, they hear the others approaching. Three vampires approach the Cullens—two men and one woman. The leader introduces himself as Laurent and the others as Victoria and James.
Carlisle introduces the Cullens and invites the three strangers back to their home, but asks them not to hunt in the area as it might cause problem for his family. Edward and James drop into crouches, snarling and baring their teeth at one another.
Edward, Alice, and Emmett bring Bella back to the edge of the trees, protecting her as they walk. Edward drives away from Forks to get Bella as far away as possible, but Bella insists that she must go home; otherwise, Charlie will call the FBI. Alice keeps telling Edward to pull over so they can think. Alice and Jasper will go with her, while Edward and Emmett stay behind to deal with James. However, James, who tracked Bella home and overheard her say she was going to Phoenix, is following too.
Edward will have to kill James, and the only way to do so is to tear him into pieces and burn the remains. He then apologizes and leaves. Esme gives Bella clothes to wear to help hide her scent. Alice and Jasper drive south with Bella. Edward, Carlisle, and Emmett plan to draw James away and then attack him. Bella wakes up in a motel room in Phoenix and recalls racing there in the car with Alice and Jasper. Bella asks how a person becomes a vampire.
Though Edward does not want Bella to know, Alice explains. When a vampire bites someone, a venom slowly and painfully spreads through their body. The transformation, so painful the victim wishes for death, takes several days. Suddenly, Alice has a vision.
She describes and sketches a room filled with mirrors, which Bella recognizes as her childhood ballet studio in Phoenix. Carlisle calls, and Alice tells him what she saw. Edward informs Bella that James eluded them and got on a plane but says that Charlie and the rest of the Cullens are safe. Bella wakes up in the middle of the night. Alice has another vision and sketches a room in which she sees James running a VCR.
Alice calls the Cullen family to inform them and tells Bella that Edward, Carlisle, and Emmett are flying to Phoenix that morning to take Bella someplace safe, but Bella worries that her mother is in danger.
Early in the morning, the phone rings, and Bella answers; on the other end, she hears her mother calling her name. Bella pictures the airport where she, Alice, and Jasper will be picking up Edward, Carlisle, and Emmett, and figures she can sneak away there. Bella knows that she will be told to go to the room of mirrors and that she will die there.
She writes a letter to Edward telling him she loves him and asking him to forgive her. She races inside and calls the number posted next to the phone. James answers and tells Bella to go to the dance studio. Once there, she finds the door unlocked and enters. Bella realizes that James tricked her; her mother was never in danger and is still safe in Florida. When James asks if Edward will avenge her, Bella replies that she left Edward a letter asking him not to.
He explains that he once thirsted for Alice, when she was a young human in an asylum. To save her from James, an older vampire turned Alice into a vampire. James taunts Bella, saying that Edward was too weak to do the same for her.
Then he viciously attacks her, smashing her head in the mirrors and breaking her leg. Bleeding, she hopes she will die quickly, and she loses consciousness as James comes toward her. In the background, she hears growling, a snap, and then wailing, which abruptly stops. Finally, she wakes enough to cry out.
A calm voice assesses her injuries. Carlisle has been attending to her injuries and realizes that James bit Bella. Alice calms Bella as Bella tries to tell Alice that James knew where she came from. Bella wakes up in a hospital room. Edward tells her that his being able to stop drinking her blood is proof of his love for her.
