The way lead is made is by Clay, Graphite and water all squeezed at high temperatures and made into the the circular or hexagonal shape.

The lead is made so thin, that when you write it will not ruin the paper. It was named lead because the Englishmen that first discovered graphite thought they found lead. Secondly, the wood frame, the part that surrounds the lead.

The wood is also what you hold onto. On some pencils they have an eraser which belongs on the end of the pencil. Also the metal cap is design to hold the eraser on. The metal cap and the eraser Coloured pencils Sketch pencils A pencil is made in a few different steps.

To start making the pencil you need the lead which is what comes out on the paper. The other part that makes the pencil come together is the wood. You start with a big block of wood then they cut it into slabs that are a little tad longer than the pencil itself. Once the slabs are created they then treat the wood with wax to give it the lovely golden colour it has and it helps make it a little easier to sharpen the pencil. Some pencils you see in the shops have pretty patterns around them.

If you want a pattern on the pencil, you send it away and they will print the pattern you want onto it. The other main part of the pencil is the part on the end. This is made by having the eraser on the end and then the metal surrounds the eraser like a coating to help it stay on. You may think a pencil comes in just one size, one shape and only has one look.
