To start making the pencil you need the lead which is what comes out on the paper. The other part that makes the pencil come together is the wood. You start with a big block of wood then they cut it into slabs that are a little tad longer than the pencil itself. Once the slabs are created they then treat the wood with wax to give it the lovely golden colour it has and it helps make it a little easier to sharpen the pencil. As the demand for the wood increased it became scarcer and was replace by Californian Incense Cedar Wood which is fast growing with continuous supplies available from sustainably managed forests.
Vatta Wood is from the Macaranga peltata tree in the Indian Kerala State region and has been used to make pencils by Indian manufacturers such as Hindustan Pencils since White Fir is from the Abies concolor tree which is an evergreen species native to Western North America and is grown by Cal Cedar in Californian sustainably managed forests as a cheaper alternative to Californian Incense Cedar Wood. It is a straight-grained wood that is used by The Derwent Pencil company to manufacture some of its pencils.
